A friend who sent me a message like that became the reason other people with something to give came together.
People meeting for the first time; the moment one person connects to another.
Women’s energy really is something. The starting point was the enormous subject of the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge — but the women’s talk never runs out, and the conversation wandered off in every direction.
Friends who had only just met setting off chemical reactions of their own, and connections forming between them, made me happier than anything. That is what happens when there is no calculation in it.
The best burger in the world is here
The place I chose is a café in Tokyo: Cafe & Bar MIDI.
They have a burger I will vouch for as the best in Japan. I dropped in last time and was bowled over. Tokyo is full of famous burgers, and this is the secret one I would rather not tell you about.
The rich cheese sauce and bacon burger. My second, on a repeat visit.
Topped with their own thick cheese sauce and bacon, on a wholemeal bun that is extremely good. A serious amount of food, and I finished it alone.
The owner is a lovely woman. Starting a place this good on her own is remarkable — and from there, spreading out the Peking to Paris PDF, we got on to how much energy that takes, and another good connection was made.
I will certainly be back. Women cannot resist the subject of good food.

These are the friends who asked, even before the campaign started, whether there was something they could do. Friends who came straight from work. I will keep driving to the finish, meeting people along the way.
And I mean to set all of it down as part of the story of a life.
It is only a few days since the start, and the connections between people have already given me real strength. I have nothing but gratitude.
