The Peking to Paris warm-up, twelve days across Spain and Morocco — the “Sahara Challenge 2023” —
we test-drove it from 19 September 2022 to 30 September 2022.

In the end, that event finished with a disappointing “retirement,” but as a test run ahead of the real Peking to Paris, I felt strongly that nothing about it had been wasted — a genuinely valuable warm-up.

But… the cause of that retirement, the “wooden wheel” problem, still hadn't been solved ten months on — no new wheel found, and with the days steadily closing in, I spent my time growing more and more anxious and at a loss.

This is bad! At this rate… there'll be no car left to actually drive in the real event!

Reaching out beyond just my contacts in Japan, drawing on advice from people overseas too, exploring every avenue I could think of —

and then, finally, in October 2023, I finally — finally — took one step forward.
A little over a year since September 2022. It really had been a long, long wait…

I'm attaching that report here.

As for what the solution turned out to be, and how it all worked out — that continues in the next report.

The pinch… what came after

We've made it this far by overcoming plenty of hardship already, but walls keep appearing, over and over, as if to say “here, try this one too.”
But we keep pushing forward, clearing them steadily, one at a time.

Never give up 🔥 never quit 🔥 that's really all there is to it.
