So! This is the sequel to the previous pinch report, “the wheels for the car aren't turning up…”the continuation of that story.

The previous report is here

Pinch! No car to enter!!

A little over a year on from that, after trial and error, chasing a solution, I finally saw a light at the end!

The conclusion — the trigger for our retirement during the Sahara Challenge test run was the wooden wheels cracking!
Wooden wheels, weak against humidity, don't suit a hot, dry environment, and keeping the original 1929 wheel design as-is would only become a shackle on us during the real Peking to Paris drive.

We chose a 1929 pre-war Buick to take on this challenge.
Driving classic cars has always meant, to me, valuing the original form as a culture of carefully preserving old things, but for this challenge, the goal is to actually finish.

The real Peking to Paris isn't a test run — it's the real thing!

So, wechanged direction and decided to switch the humidity-sensitive wooden wheels for metal ones (wire wheels).

And get this — we're having them made in 3D, a real fusion with modern technology, of all things?

Here's the finished design

This should dramatically improve the wheel problem — better balance, lighter weight, better resistance to brake fade, faster wheel removal on a flat, and a huge cut in repair time!

I learned that “giving up” and “changing direction” both matter

First, just try it! When a problem comes up, not clinging to it, and having the flexibility to let go or change direction, matters too.

It's the same in life — halfway through, you notice “something's not right,” but seriousness or stubbornness gets in the way, and often you just can't move forward as a result.

But since I did at least try it, I must have grown more than if I'd never known anything about it at all.
So, let's give ourselves credit, and move forward again!
