What I learned this time…
It's precisely in the painful moments when so many things aren't going right that what you're able to do actually matters.
Wish for an easy, effortless path, and even the smallest things start to feel painful.
Our previous test run at the Sahara Challenge ended in retirement, but getting a clear picture of the drivetrain before the real event was a genuinely valuable result!
If we hadn't found this fix for last time's wheel problem… I'm certain it would have meant an unrecoverable retirement somewhere along the 14,000 km, 37-day route — and thinking about that, every single failure has become a huge source of growth.
There'd been a clicking sound from inside, so we stripped everything down, from the transmission through the drive shaft to the differential, and found it scarred all over… plenty of spots where gear teeth had chipped away too.
Inside the torque tube, things were flat-out destroyed, practically blown apart (ugh).
It had taken serious damage during last year's Spain-Morocco leg (the Peking to Paris warm-up test run), and this time a large-scale repair turned out to be necessary.
Compared to what's visible on the surface, what's happening behind the scenes was full of quiet, unglamorous, far-from-calm problems.
Even so, I feel genuinely lucky that we got to go through this trial and error before the real event.
This challenge has taught me a great many important things, well beyond just the material problems.
